A Visitor’s Guide to the Mauna Loa Volcano

Where is Mauna Loa Volcano?

Mauna Loa is located on the Big Island of Hawai’i, which is also known as Kona, within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The volcano itself covers half of the island. This portion of the volcano is referred to asthe “subaerial part” and extends about 74 miles (120 km) east-northeast from the southern tip of the island. The caldera, or summit, is located near Hilo.

What Type of Volcano is Mauna Loa?

This iconic landmark is a shield volcano with a main summit caldera named Moku‘āweoweo. It is also comprised of two rift zones to the northeast and the southwest. Historically, these rifts have been very active, with substantial flows in 1984 and 1950, each of which came within close proximity of populated areas.

Is Mauna Loa Active?

Yes. In fact, it is the largest active volcano in the world. This volcano, Mauna Loa, has erupted 34 times since 1843, when the recording of eruption history began. This is an average of once every five years. Scientists estimate that over the past 3,000 years, the volcano Mauna Loa in Hawai’i has erupted once every six years.

Typically, these eruptions begin in the summit caldera and later migrate to the rift zone.

How Do You Access Mauna Loa?

Mauna Loa Lookout & Road: One of the easiest and most accessible ways to experience Mauna Loa is to drive Mauna Loa Road from Highway 11, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, to Mauna Loa Lookout. Hiking the Summit: Accessing the summit of Mauna Loa is difficult and dangerous. However, experienced high-altitude hikers can use trial systems within the park to reach the summit when permitted by the USGS and National Parks. At the time of this article (March 2026), the only trail open to access the summit is the ʻĀinapō Trail. Overnight hikers must obtain a backcountry permit. Please note that the summit is at 13,679 feet,has steep terrain, and harsh weather.
