Discover 6 Unique Beaches on the Big Island
Hāpuna Beach
This beautiful, white sand beach along the Kohala Coast is consistently cited as one of the best beaches on the Big Island. In fact, Conde Nast Traveler has named this slice of paradise one of the best beaches in America. The largest white sand beach on the island, Hapuna is known for good snorkeling, swimming, and bodysurfing conditions. It is possible to surf in this area at times when the current isn’t too strong.
If you plan to visit Hapuna at the beginning of the year, be sure to keep an eye out for whales! While this beach is definitely worth a visit, it is one of the most popular ones in the area, so be aware that the shore can get crowded during peak season.
Punalu’u Beach
Have you walked across jet-black sand colored by volcanic basalt? On your trip to the Big Island, you can experience this unusual phenomenon! Often called “Black Sand Beach,” Punalu’u is the island’s most famous beach with this pigmentation. Besides the unique sand, you can also spot endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles lounging in the sun at this spot.
It is possible to go swimming and snorkeling here, but be mindful of the current as it can get very strong, making it too dangerous to swim. If you’re looking to snorkel, check out Ninole Cove on the southwestern side of the beach. Here, the shore forms a bay protecting snorkelers from the potentially powerful current.
Makalawena Beach
Along the Kona Coast, Makalawena Beach is the most secluded slice of paradise you’ll find on the Big Island. Why? Because this beach requires a bit of effort to reach. Strap on some comfortable footwear and make a 20 minute hike across the lava field. Once you arrive, the journey is well worth the reward. You’ll discover a secluded paradise with powdery sand, crystal-clear waters, and significantly fewer crowds than more accessible Big Island beaches.
Makalawena’s protected coves create excellent swimming conditions when the ocean is calm, while the offshore reef provides outstanding snorkeling opportunities. Keep an eye out for Hawaiian green sea turtles that frequently visit these waters! The beach’s remote nature means there are no facilities, so come prepared with plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection for a day of unspoiled beachfront bliss.
Papakōlea Beach
Papakōlea Beach is one of four green sand beaches in the entire world. The strange pigment is caused by deposits of the lava mineral olivine. Because this element is heavier than others, it remains on the shore longer. Inspect the sand closely to see the green grains mixed with black and white.
To get to this secluded beach, you must embark on a 2-mile hike or pay a local to drive you there in a 4×4. If you’re able-bodied and enjoy outdoor activities, the hike is worth the effort. Cliffs surround the shore to create an inlet, which you must climb down. Once you’ve reached the shore, take in the natural beauty, but do not attempt to swim here as the waters are very rough.
Kua Bay
For those seeking both beauty and convenience among Big Island beaches, Kua Bay delivers spectacularly. Located just north of Kona, this stunning white sand beach offers easy access via a paved road and parking lot, making it perfect for families or those with limited mobility. This is a smaller beach, so if you want an uncrowded day at the beach, the best time to visit is earlier in the day during the week.
Also known as Manini’owali Beach, Kua Bay features crystal-clear turquoise waters that provide excellent visibility for snorkeling when the ocean is calm. During winter months, the surf can pick up, creating exciting conditions for experienced bodyboarders and surfers. Unlike more remote Big Island beaches, Kua Bay offers basic amenities including restrooms, showers, and picnic areas, allowing visitors to comfortably spend an entire day enjoying this coastal gem.
Mauna Kea Beach
Mauna Kea Beach, officially named Kauna’oa Bay, represents luxury beach-going at its finest. What makes this Big Island beach truly special is its perfect combination of natural beauty and convenient amenities. The gentle slope of the ocean floor creates ideal swimming conditions for all ages, while the protected bay offers excellent snorkeling.. In the evenings, the hotel sets up flood lights that attract plankton, which in turn draws manta rays close to shore.
While public access is available, parking is limited to about 40 spaces, so arrive early (before 9 am) to secure your spot. Once there, you can enjoy a full day at the beach with access to restrooms, showers, and even dining options at the nearby hotel.
